About the Leftover Lounge

Currently resides on this wonderful forum page thing. The forum is currently considered only very loosely connected with the original Leftover Lounge late night thread.

The origins of LOL and the late night threads go back as far as Summer 2006 when the then moderator of the Official Nintendo Magazine forum, Wildfire, created a late night discussion thread for members in the early hours of the morning every evening. This proved a highly popular feature to the forums at the time and became infamous thereafter for the content in the threads as well as the controversy created by the threads.

In January 2007, a separate late night thread was begun by the member,Jesus was a Hobo (Now Rawie was a Hobo). This thread was called "Why are you on so late?" and was the start of something special. It became an unofficial late night topic such was the popularity and every night at around 10.30pm a mod would unlock it. The members online at that time would utilise the thread, which had little restrictions, and discussion remained about anything and everything. The next morning, the first mod online would lock it and this continued for several nights.

Several other late-night-discussions started up, including those by Beaumont, and others. When these threads were dis-continued, the then moderator Shaun2005 created the "Overnight Overload" following similar themes and rules to that of RWAH thread. The thread proved highly popular and after a better name was suggested by the member Ookami (then named evil-tedâ„¢), after spotting an inspiring post by member Highlight, the name was changed to the Leftover Lounge. The thread featured open discussions which usually lapsed into more mature discussions. A regular feature of the thread was the quiz which usually lasted from midnight through until 12:30am with the eventual winner being granted temporary naming rights over the following nights threads. Another, more controversial feature, was the continued mature vibe of posters, and the gradual lapse of forum rules, eventually turning the Leftover Lounge into an anarchy. The topics lasted for a month before being discontinued for consistent breach of the rules by forum members and moderators.

Several attempts by members to revive the thread under different guises failed. The decision was made unanimously by all of the moderators at the time and a petition was started in Forum Feedback & Troubleshooting, but the decision was final and despite pleading for the case and raising several interesting arguments, there was still no compelling evidence to reopen the thread in the form that had seen it closed previously.

During March 2007 a group of 3 Moderators (namely, Bretty, Gofthick and Evil Ted) started to take over topics about modship. After 3 nights of ruined threads, Chris@ONM cottoned on and warned the creators about it. Evil Ted then went on to create the leftover lounge forum when it was clear that the Leftover Lounge would only continue to reappear in ONM's Off Topic section. Members now frequent the Leftover Lounge forum to chat, spam and continue the general theme of LOL, to the tune of over 100 members with over 5000 posts and counting (althought the member count did exceed 300 at one point in its history).

The Leftover Lounge is now a thriving community, having undergone several transformations, server changes, and reinventions, before settling for its roots long after its apparent "demise".
